Seattle’s South Sound is jazzed over Lonnie Mardis’ debut CD release: About the Day
SEATTLE – Noted Seattle jazz guitarist, Lonnie Mardis and his quintet appear again tonight, Sun. Nov. 7 at Stonegate in Tacoma from 5 to 8 p.m. after his first show last night on Vashon Island last night in support of Mardis’s debut CD release, About the Day.
The 10-track CD is an offering of straight-ahead jazz instrumentals certain to please the most discerning jazz aficionado. Mardis says, “I am hoping that “About the Day” creates the space for you to take time out, slow down, reflect and be mindful of what is important to you as you go about your day.”
Mardis describes the concert offering of original music as “an interesting blend of jazz, blues, rock and classical influences.” Among his influencers are Thelonius Monk, Joe Henderson, Jerome Kern, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and the Northwest’s seminal garage rock band, The Fabulous Wailers.
The quintet includes Sandon Mayhew on sax, Chuck Smith on piano, Todd Zimberg on drums, Rick Houle on bass, and Mardis on guitar.
A native to the Northwest, Mardis currently resides in West Seattle and has been a staple in the Seattle music scene for many years. He holds a Master’s Degree in Music Performance from the New England Conservatory and has performed throughout the United States and Japan leading many ensembles and bands with a variety of styles including jazz, swing, rock, blues, and classical. Appearances with Bobby Shew, Roger Fischer, Pete Christlieb, as well as the opening act for Maynard Ferguson are among his performance credits. In addition, he is a composer/arranger for Sunhawk Music, the 25th Army Band and short film scores.
Most recently Mardis contracted with Jazzman’s Cafe’s and the Retail Brand Group, composing jazz for performance and purchase in restaurants. About the Day is his first offering in the venture. He is the music director for the Seattle Central Jazz Orchestra and the Federal Way Symphony Swing Band.
Tickets for the Vashon performance are $15 for members and $18 for non-members. This engagement includes complimentary champagne and desserts.
