A bit of Nashville gracing Asheville: Grace Adele appears at The French Broad Brewery in support of new CD The Grand Sessions

(Nashville, TN – February 22) Just days before her Nashville debut CD drops, Grace Adele returns to Asheville Sat. March 10 at 6:00 p.m. at The French Broad Brewery, 101 Fairview Road, #D.

From Knoxville the night before, Grace Adele visits Asheville in support of her Nashville debut CD, “The Grand Sessions,” slated to drop Tues.March 20. Produced by Grammy award-winning engineer/producer, Phil Harris, “The Grand Sessions” is ten cuts of original material written and performed by Grace Adele, and features guest appearances by Chris Scruggs, Buddy Spicher, David Mayfield, and Ketch Secor.

The Grace Adele brand stands for an elegant feminine vintage style hailing back to old country music pioneered by Patsy Cline. Several decades later, Grace Adele artfully blends a variety of root styles including country swing, bluegrass, folk, and indie rock. With her Grand Band behind her, Grace Adele stands shoulder-to-shoulder with other now famous groups and duos in the Americana genre with one exception: Grace Adele fronts The Grand Band – a coveted position for a female singer songwriter in a fiercely competitive era dominated by men.

Her songwriting captures traditional themes delivered with an authentic feminine patina. No artifice is needed when classic values are the foundation of intent. The most impressive part of Grace Adele and The Grand Band is there is no question about why the music is important. Long-established storytelling traditions combined with time-honored music styles hold a very special place within the hearts of the American people.

”Something to Say,” “Sweet and Lonesome,” “Brown Eyes,” “All My Dreams,” “Town’s Too Small,” and “Over You,” are eloquent songs capturing universal stories with just the right feeling behind them. Each of these tunes can be found on “The Grand Sessions” at live shows, as well as iTunes, CDBaby.com and Amazon.com. The CD is $10.00.

(Nashville, TN – February 22) Grammy award-winning American fingerstyle guitarist, Eric Tingstad launched “Badlands” in all national retail markets Tues. Feb. 21 through Burnside Distribution Company. “Badlands” is the follow-up to his Grammy nominated CD, “Southwest.” Tingstad’s latest solo outings are instrumental Americana recordings paying homage to traditions of American roots music and western culture. Listen to the title cut on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iyZonE2PLE&feature=related

Above all, Tingstad’s brand stands for a sense of place and his relationship to the land and the environment. ”Southwest” is earthy and evocative, capturing the spiritual essence of ancient cultures. In “Badlands” Tingstad has a slightly menacing message that the desert is a beautiful and spiritual place, but you can also get in big trouble out there. Thinking about his boots, snakes, and that empty tequila bottle, Tingstad has certainly captured the essence of the west channeling his new age cowboy with a punch.

”Badlands” features abundant dobro, steel guitars, fiddle, and shamanic drumming tied together with the guitar playing of Tingstad and Cindy Cashdollar; percussionist, Byron Metcalf, and woodwind virtuoso, Nancy Rumbel. In fact, a whole posse of musicians join the ensemble showcasing Tingstad’s songwriting ability. Roy Orbison’s Crying appears as the only cover blending beautifully with titles Blue Delta, Dripping Springs, Cactus Cantina, The Last Roundup, and Chaco, which Tingstad co-wrote with Nancy Rumbel in 1996.

Perhaps best known as the harmonic half of the Grammy-winning duo, Tingstad & Rumbel, Eric has been writing, recording and performing with Nancy since 1985, when their holiday release, “The Gift” was an immediate success and became a holiday classic. After years of recording and touring, their thirteenth release, “Acoustic Garden” won the Grammy for Best New Age Album in 2003.

A classically trained guitarist in the Segovian tradition, Tingstad began his recording career in 1981 with “On The Links.” As a solo artist he developed a devoted following with a warm, personal style that became known as “Northwest Impressionism.” Growing up in the rural northwest, his love for traditional music is part of his roots. Lucinda Williams, John Mellencamp, Lori McKenna and Billy Joe Shaver are among his countless favorite recording artists. His reverence for the craft of songwriting and the many artists that do it so well, speak to his integrity as a musician. He says one of the highest compliments paid to “Southwest” was the comparison of his playing to that of Ry Cooder in “Paris, Texas.”

”Badlands” is available in retail outlets across the country as well as iTunes, Amazon.com, CDBaby.com and by visiting Tingstad’s website at http://erictingstad.com

Out of curiosity, I listened to Linkin Park’s version of “Rolling In The Deep.” To say I was underwhelmed is putting it mildly. Why they covered it is a speculative matter.

“Rolling In The Deep” works so well for Adele because she delivers the emotion behind words that anyone could have said. She not only delivers she makes you feel it. That is why this song has made such an impact on music over the past year, and why she impressed her peers enough to win six GRAMMY awards.

Before you ask me or anyone to listen to your music you should ask yourself this question: Why is this music important? What is the purpose, and why is it important enough someone should take a few minutes out of their day to give it thoughtful consideration?

Every so often a small topic comes up that needs addressing…or some discussion at a minimum. Small things don’t need a whole blog post, so here’s a potpourri of little things that make a difference in your music career.

As a rule, (there’s always an exception, of course) music insiders do not put much value in the content of ReverbNation and other sites of similar nature. There are good, solid reasons for this. Music pros are not on a scavenger hunt to hear your music. If you want someone to listen, ask if you can send them your favorite cut and see what the response is.

Further, by relying heavily on sites like Reverb, what you’re doing is building their credibility and their brand over and above your own. As an indie artist, your brand is the priority. Keep that in mind.

Many times a day people ask me to vote on something. Fans are your primary target within the realm of accumulating votes. When you send a music pro a request to listen, like, vote, or whatever, you have wasted your time and potentially made a weak impression. The intent behind such strategies is to build or accumulate data that you can then take to a music pro. Instead of asking them to join your fan base in voting, ask the music pro if you can give them the data alongside the music to see if it is useful to them.

Both topics addressed above bring up a more important issue. Most of the requests that I get, (other music pros have expressed this as well) come from people totally out of the blue. They haven’t tried to even say hello. This is a basic infraction that many indies should avoid at all costs. In essence, they are handing me a homework assignment with a pop quiz that I didn’t sign up for. My time is valuable and so is the time of other music insiders. Being respectful of their time will get you much further than arbitrary requests.

On Twitter, there seems to be a misconception about the number of followers vs. the number of people followed. Artists without an established career or name recognition show a great deal of narcissism when they follow very few people and expect many to follow them. This is social media folks, not anti-social media. Engagement is the name of the game.

For every person who requests that I follow them on Twitter and Facebook, I check out their profile, links, location, and their thread. For those that don’t indicate where they’re located, they’ve missed a great opportunity to engage. I understand that some profiles are written with creative intent. Telling me your location is planet Earth however, is not helpful to me or anyone else.

Time and time again, when asked to visit someone’s website, (I almost always answer the request) there is often a huge disconnect when music is on auto-play entering an artist’s site. Usually I’m already listening to something else and suddenly I have to log out of one or both places because two different pieces of music are bleeding together. The assumption that being hit with your music is somehow going to endear you to me is a double-edge sword. If I am really impressed with what I “choose” to listen to, I’ll get back to you, and you have my word on that.

Above all remember that music is a business, and there is a certain etiquette required before you hit someone up to do you any favors that require the investment of their time. Being polite will put you head and shoulders above the competition.

Paying your dues in the music biz is a bit like being a clown or juggler entertaining the king and queen in medieval courts.

Today, most club and venue owners are taking that same medieval approach toward music. They hire bands, based not on the quality of the music, but on the amount of money offered and the fan base the band is expected to draw along with any other promotional efforts the band spends time and money to produce.

Several articles are emerging about this situation illustrating clearly the expectation is a one way street in favor of the club or venue. The first post I found was in a daily email I receive from Michael Brandvold.

No Pay Involved, But You Can Promote Your Work | Michael Brandvold Marketing – Music Marketing

A few days later, professional jazz musician, Dave Goldberg outlined a similar situation addressing club owners in Los Angeles: http://www.scribd.com/doc/78468650/La-Club-Owners

Right when we were talking, a group of people interrupted us and said ”you guys sound great, when is the next time you’re playing here again?” The club owner, said ”they aren’t, they didn’t bring anyone.”

If you’re a working class musician, I’m sure you understand this situation all too well. Musicians need great clubs as much as clubs need great musicians. They are few and far between on both counts I suspect.

After thinking about this and discussing it with a few musician friends, I can tell you none of us has a definitive answer. We come up with strategies we think might work, but someone has to convince the club owner to go along with the idea. Something tells me that might be easier said than done.

Everyone involved has much to gain by coming up with solutions that benefit both the club and the band. Please pass this on to your musician friends and club owners. By all means, leave your comments.

Thought leaders prevail in tough times, and I’m here to tell you, these are tough times for everyone. Without some well-thought out strategies, our only choice may be to go back to something like the disco era, and I don’t think anyone wants that to happen.

Time is running out for many on getting a jump start on their music careers. And the weakest link in nearly every single situation is booking. There are so few competent booking agents available to an over saturated music market, one has to wonder why.

The answer is this: The old model is bound to fail in the current music market.

The old model for booking agents makes it one of the most thankless jobs imaginable due to an antiquated commission-based situation that works for very few. That is to say a booking agent incurs all the expense of phone, fax, internet service, some travel, booking conferences, and going out to see live performances. When a booking occurs, the agent waits until the gig has concluded, sometimes up to five days before receiving 15% of the bands booking fee.

In this music climate, bands are not getting huge fees to play. So let’s say an agent has booked a band in a local club for $300. Fifteen percent of 300 is 45. Therefore, the agent should receive $45 for this gig. Now let’s say the agent booked 10 gigs that occurred in one month. That’s a total of $450. That’s not much money for all the time, relentless phone calls, and one gigantic whirlwind of activity. No one can live on that kind of monthly income.

The situation has to change. There are lots of people out there who would love to become a booking agent, but many are fearful of failure, not having the right contacts, contracts, and most importantly the behavior of an impatient band. So it’s no big surprise there aren’t a surplus of agents in this market.

Business-minded musicians should therefore take it upon themselves to create a working relationship with someone who wants to do this with 21st-century sensibilities. Here are a few suggestions:

Talk with friends and associates about potential candidates to do your booking rather than spending time looking for an established agent.

Once you find more than one candidate, talk to these people about what your realistic expectations are and what kind of retainer it would take to cover their overhead for one year taking into consideration all the amenities like phone service, fax service, postage, mailing supplies, printing and copying, travel allowance, internet service, etc. Once you find a good fit for what you need, sign a one year agreement delineating goals, monthly retainers, fees for actual bookings, and any other information important in the relationship.

Things to be careful of:

Verbal agreements lead to nothing but misunderstandings as a general rule.

Anyone who wants to do booking for the love of music is not a good choice. Yes, there is passion in that person’s agenda, but there is no business acumen. Remember above all, music is a business.

The band must be in agreement with the overall goals you want the booking agent to meet.

Appoint one, and only one, spokesperson for the band to interface with the booking agent. No one other than the appointed band member is allowed to interface with the agent about business.

Do not under any circumstances hound, harass, or otherwise bully the booking agent to get something done. If the agent is not performing well according to the goals you put into a written agreement, determine what the problem is. There are many reasons why things don’t run like clockwork in this situation.

Dedication on both sides of the business relationship should prevail in increased bookings which stimulates the growth of your career. Instead of running in circles, dedicate one year to a truly professional situation to get your performance calendar full. From there just rinse and repeat, or refine your approach and try again.

Remember that anyone providing services to musicians do not have magic wands. For as many struggles as musicians have, these people meet just as many challenges as you do.

Laissez le bon temp rouler at Bourbon Street Blues & Boogie Bar: Let the good times roll with Nashville’s Bad Moon Blues Band and Leslie B. Smith of New Orleans

Nashville ain’t N’awlins, but come on uptown to Bourbon Street Blues & Boogie Bar, Fri. Feb. 17 for a pre-Mardi Gras celebration with the boys of Bad Moon Blues Band and get your swamp groove on at 9:00 p.m. sharp. At 10:30 p.m.New Orleans native, Leslie B. Smith will front Bad Moon until 2:00 a.m with some foot stompin’ native N’awlins Mardi Gras fare.

Bad Moon is rising to the top of the local blues scene with a roster of pedigreed players Nashville calls its own. Bourbon Street regulars are familiar with Bad Moon’s sax player, Peter Burger, who played in Stacy Mitchhart’s house band for over a dozen years. Burger has an envious list of touring and recording credits that include performances in more than 20 countries. Bass player, Richard Sanders toured the US and Canada for a decade with Scott Holt’s blues outfit before joining Bad Moon in 2010.His career includes working with producer, Christopher Cross, as well as a string of songwriting credits over the past 30 years. Drummer, Vic Mastrianni, is well-known throughout the country among legendary bands he’s toured with globally. B.B. King and Elvin Bishop are among the blues luminaries Mastrianni has played with since moving to Nashville in 1975. Tom Whisenhunt is called a blues guitar wizard and has been the front man of Bad Moon since its inception. He co-wrote the 2003 Bluesy Award-winning CD, Bluesday Afternoon, and has two Bluesy Awards for Guitarist of the Year. Hammond B3 master, Moe Denham, who’s appeared with Ray Charles, Bobby “Blue” Bland, and John Lee Hooker among others joins Bad Moon for this performance.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chic design firm launches with a mission:

Make the world a better place.

Art Jones • Design • Los Angeles

January 23, 2012 – Los Angeles

A new Los Angeles-based multimedia design firm launches today, providing Brand Identity, Print Media, Packaging, and Web Design services― with a socially responsible twist.

Recognizing the need for marketing solutions that integrate both compelling design and social responsibility, Art Jones Los Angeles (AJLA) seeks opportunities to support local businesses and the creative community. AJLA does not participate in offshore outsourcing, or “crowd-sourcing,” and aims to provide green alternatives for clients seeking more sustainable media options.

With over thirty years’ experience in design and print, founder Art Jones identifies some of the new challenges of the marketplace. “Historically, many of our clients have been artists, musicians, and other creatives,” said Jones. “However, recent developments in the global community have led us to include more commercial clientele. Today, companies are called to demonstrate some intuitive sensibilities with respect to responsible marketing; to do good for the community, humanity, and the planet. They need assistance getting there, and that’s where we come in. Helping companies do good – and do good business – now that’s something to get behind.”

When asked what the future holds for AJLA, creative director Dick Van Nuys is all smiles. “We want to help local companies discover how both great design and social responsibility will benefit them. Every business out there is going to benefit from raising their ecological, social, and economic awareness. By working with local designers who care about responsible messaging and who can provide more sustainable options, business owners in our community will be working together toward making a difference at the same time they’re raising the perception of their businesses. We’re all part of the same community; being successful together is what it’s all about.”

This is the first Music Monday feature of 2012 talking with Merynes Cabral, who is in the development stage of RockMeBabyTV. I’ve been curious about her new platform and here is what she has to say.

What is your background in music and where did you get the inspiration for RockMeBabyTV?

In the music industry I’m a newbie my background is on TV/Film Production where I have been working since I was 16 years old. I also have Advertising/Graphic design studies and most recent a bachelor’s in Digital Film Production at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale where while working on my portfolio, under the mentoring of Kyle Farley Senior Instructor, Video and Digital Film Departmentsat Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale http://www.linkedin.com/pub/kyle-w-farley/30/611/aa8 and my friend Daniel Delaney Host & Executive Producer of VendrTv & What’s this Food? http://vendr.tv/ They both challenge and encourage me to define and give birth to RockMeBabyTV.

I have always loved music. When I was a little I used to sing while my mom was pushing me on the stroller and when I was older I used to stand in front of the TV and sing every commercial driving my brother edcrazy.

When I turned 20 I had an offer to make a record but I couldn’t overcome the stage fright. I haven’t give up that dream, still in the back burner

For that reason I always admire and respect people who stand in front of an audience and I felt that in order for someone to be noticed they shouldn’t participate in shows that ridicules their talents or be chosen by a group of people whose standards are way too high for anyone to meet.

Everyone deserves an opportunity. As long as you believe in yourself and if you develop your talent with passion you are a rock star.

You’re a young entrepreneur in the music business. How do you envision your model influencing all the changes taking place on the Internet and its role in music

As a young entrepreneur I envision setting the bar high demonstrating that by using the tools at hand and the advantage that the social networks offers, Indie musicians will have their spotlight.

What’s Rockmebabytv is about?

To deliver a message with a clear motivating statement to a new generation to follow their example and teach them that through music expression there’s a significance number of people that could be approached and goals that could be conquered.

We will be an asset to new talents seeking an open door opportunity where they can expose their music, with no need to participate in a contest. Every guest will be treated as a winner, a unique opportunity, allowing them to reach new markets, audiences and countries.
